“Sarah was brilliant” is worth more than a paragraph of general praise. Reviews that name a staff member tell future customers that real people work here and care. They also bring responsibilities that most owners never think about until a review turns personal.
Why named reviews matter
Named reviews are specific, they are hard to fake, and they show the kind of service a new customer can expect. For small businesses where the same few people serve everyone, a name is also a promise.
Replying to a positive named review
Thank the customer and pass on the credit. Something like “Thanks, we will make sure Sarah sees this” is warm and brief. Do not add the staff member’s surname, role details or anything else the reviewer did not mention.
Share them with the team
Reading named reviews out at a team meeting is one of the most effective ways to keep people asking for reviews, because the ask becomes the way people hear they did well. See the real reason nobody on your team asks.
When a review criticises a staff member
This is harder. The staff member will almost certainly read it, and they cannot reply themselves.
- Reply as the business, not as the person named. Take responsibility for the service rather than pointing at an individual.
- Do not discipline or defend anyone in public. “We have spoken to the team” is enough. Internal matters stay internal.
- Talk to the staff member first. Hear their side before you reply.

When a review becomes harassment
A review that attacks a staff member personally, discusses their appearance, or shares personal information about them can breach Google’s content policies on harassment and personal information. Report it through your Business Profile. See can you get a Google review removed.
Staff should never review their own workplace
It is a conflict of interest under Google’s policies, however well meant. The same goes for asking staff to get friends and family to review. See asking for reviews without breaking the rules.
Name badges help
Customers can only name staff if they know their names. A name badge or a friendly introduction is one of the simplest ways to get more specific reviews. See how to get more detailed reviews.
