A cleaning business has a peculiar problem. The better the service, the less the customer sees of you. Regular clients come home to a clean house and a closed door, and the moment where a review would naturally happen never arrives.
Why cleaners under-review
There is no handover, no counter, no pickup. Regular clients are happy but passive, and the relationship runs on autopilot. End of lease clients are stressed and busy moving. Commercial clients have an office manager who never thinks about it.
So the ask has to be designed in, rather than waiting for a moment that never comes.
Residential regulars
- After the first month. The routine is set, the client has seen consistent results, and a short message with the link lands well.
- A card left behind, once. On the kitchen bench after a clean, with a handwritten thank you. Not every visit, which feels pushy. Once.
- After a big job. A spring clean or a deep clean produces a visible before and after, and clients notice.
End of lease cleans
End of lease is the most searched cleaning service, and the most review driven, because tenants want their bond back and are terrified of choosing badly. The moment to ask is when the bond comes back, not when the clean finishes. A follow up message a week or two later, asking how the inspection went, catches the happiest version of the client.
Commercial cleaning
Commercial clients rarely review on Google, and asking every office worker is pointless. Ask the person who signs the contract, once, after a good quarter. Their review carries more weight with other business buyers than any number of residential ones.
Setting up your listing
Most cleaning businesses work from home and should run as a service area business, with the address hidden. See Google Business Profile for service area businesses.
What to avoid
- No discount on the next clean for a review. That is an incentive, and Google bans it.
- Do not mention anything about the client’s home in your replies. Their address, their belongings and their schedule are private.
- Ask every client the same way, not just the ones who texted a thank you.
