Google reviews in Melbourne’s southeast: what we see in Casey and Cardinia

We are based in Pakenham, which means the businesses we talk to most are in Casey and Cardinia: Officer, Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Beaconsfield, Clyde North, Drouin down the highway. The pattern in a growth corridor is different from an established suburb, and it changes what a review programme is worth.

Everyone is new

In a suburb that has been there for eighty years, the good local plumber has four hundred reviews and a twenty year head start. In a corridor where whole estates appear in a season, almost nobody has that. The cafe in the new town centre and the one that opened last month are competing from roughly the same standing start.

That is the opportunity. Catching up on reviews in an established market takes years. Getting ahead in a new one takes a consistent quarter.

Distance is doing a lot of work

Google names distance as one of three local ranking factors, alongside relevance and prominence. In a corridor this spread out, distance is unusually decisive. Someone searching in Clyde North is not getting the same three results as someone in Berwick, even for identical searches, because the map is genuinely far apart out here.

The practical read: you are not competing with every business in the southeast. You are competing with the handful within a few kilometres of the people searching. That is a much smaller fight than it looks, and reviews move the needle faster in a small field.

Where the customers actually come from

Businesses here consistently underestimate how much of their trade is drive-by from a nearby estate and how much is word of mouth in local community groups. Both of those end at the same place: someone types your name into Google to check you are real before they call. What they see at that moment is your review count and your most recent review.

What we see working locally

• Trades with a card in the ute. The corridor is full of new builds, which means an enormous amount of maintenance, landscaping, blinds, fencing and electrical work. • Service businesses working across several suburbs. One listing, one review pool, serving a wide area. Reviews are the main way to look bigger than a one van operation.

What does not work

Trying to rank separately for every suburb name. Businesses in the corridor are often sold pages built around suburb keywords, one per town, near identical. Google calls those doorway pages and filters them. A single strong listing with real reviews from real local customers outperforms twenty thin pages, and costs nothing to maintain.
