A gym sees its best customers more often than almost any other business sees anyone. A member training three mornings a week walks past your front desk more than a hundred and fifty times a year. Most of them have never been asked for a review once.

Why gyms under-review

Membership businesses have a timing problem. There is no single moment where the service is delivered and finished, the way a haircut or a meal is. The member arrives sweaty and focused, leaves sweaty and in a hurry, and the relationship just continues. Nobody ever reaches the natural end point where a review occurs to them.

So a gym has to create the moment rather than wait for it.

The moments that work

Where the tap point goes

Not on the gym floor. Nobody is getting a phone out between sets for your Google listing. The places that work are the ones where people pause:

Follows matter more here than almost anywhere

Fitness is one of the few categories where the social account is genuinely part of the product. Timetable changes, class cancellations, challenges, member shout outs, a new coach starting. Members who follow you turn up more, and members who turn up more stay longer.

That makes a follow stand at the front desk worth as much as a review stand, and for a studio with an active Instagram or TikTok, arguably more. Pick one platform per stand and only the ones you actually post to. There is more on that in getting Instagram and TikTok follows from people standing in front of you.

What trainers should say

That was a big one. If you tap your phone on the card at the desk, it opens our Google page. It honestly helps us more than anything.

No star count, no offer. Membership businesses are especially tempted to trade a free week or a smoothie for a review. Google bans incentivised reviews outright, so do not. The detail is in asking for reviews without breaking the rules.

A note on personal training claims

Reviews of gyms often describe results: weight lost, injuries recovered from, times improved. On Google that is the member’s own account. If you are also a registered health practitioner, such as a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist running a clinic side, quoting those reviews in your own advertising runs into testimonial rules. See reviews and AHPRA.

What good looks like

A gym with three hundred members that asks at milestones and keeps a stand at the desk tends to build a steady trickle rather than a flood. That is exactly what you want: a listing where the newest review is always recent, which tells a prospective member the place is alive right now.
